Half-Marathon Training Week 3

Monday 12/08

Only 145 more days before my first Half-Marathon.

I weighed in this morning at 226lbs. I started week 3 off with a 7.20 Kms run this morning around the track at my local YMCA. I finished with a time of 42:35.

Last week I started to experience some discomfort in my right foot. Probably due to not stretching enough or at all prior to my runs. I ran today with a tensor bandage wrapped around it and it felt fine.

Tuesday 12/09

144 days and counting before my first Half-Marathon. I ran 4.91 Kms in 30 minutes on the Treadmill after work. Bringing my total for the week to 12.11 Kms. My max heart rate was 176 bpm. When I got home I noticed some discomfort above my left knee. Nothing that can't be cured with Ibuprofen and rest.

Wednesday 12/10

143 days and counting. Another 4.91 Kms on the treadmill. My total for the week is 17.02 Kms. The discomfort I was feeling yesterday is gone.

Thursday 12/11

142 more days to go. Today is a well deserved rest day.

Friday 12/12

141 days and counting. My weight is still holding steady at 226 lbs. Another 4.86 Kms on the treadmill. My total for the week is 21.88 Kms. My workout was pain free. Saturday and Sunday will be rest days. Back to training on Monday with 8 Kms on an Indoor Track.

Slept-In

My morning didn't start off so great. I forgot to set my alarm clock last night and ended up being 45 minutes late for work. To make up the time, I skipped my lunch break. Thakfully this is day 6 of a 6 day stretch and tomorrow is a day off.
No workouts for me today. Tommorrow I plan on a 6Km workout around the track at my local YMCA.

Training Week 1: November 23-29

This week went well. It was my first week of training since officially registering for the Half-Marathon. I ran a total of 19.4 Kms. All of my workouts were on the Treadmill.

After my final workout of the week, I was having some minor discomfort above my right knee. After a good nights rest the discomfort was gone.

I also practiced some visulization as I was running. In the last mile of my workout, I visulized that it was the last mile of my Half-Marathon. I pictured the finish line up ahead. My wife and daughters there waiting for me. They all have a look of pride on their faces. I give my wife one of the biggest hugs ever. Even though she can't stand to touch me after a workout. She gets grossed out by sweat. I also pictured my mother waiting at the finish line.

About a year and a half ago, my mother chose a man over her own son and grandchildren. After raising me single handedly and for 27 years being the best friend I ever had. She chose to walk out of my life forever. She wouldn't admit it, but she's ashamed of me. I pictured her at the finish line because part of me wants her to be there to show her what she walked out on. To show her my accomplisments outweigh my failures.

While listening to my MP3 Player during one of my workouts, the song Cleaning Out My Closet by Eminem came on. I have the song on my MP3 Player because I think it's a good song. But this time there was actually a personal connection to this song.

Registered for My First Half

I have finally decided to take the plunge. Not that plunge. I'm already married. The plunge I'm talking about is that I have registered for my first Half-Marathon. It is the Winnipeg Police Services Half-Marathon. I have given myself plenty of time to train. Race day is May 3rd, 2009. I'm excited and nervous at the same time.
I'm excited because it is my first Half-Marathon and nervous because I hate to fail. I chose this race as my first Half-Marathon because of the charity that it supports, the Canadian Cancer Society. Cancer has affected many people in my family. Cancer took away both my grandmothers, as well as my step-grandfather. These three people were very supportive of me my entire life. They believed in me and admired my determination. My sister-in-law also battled Cancer earlier this year. I think that I have more than enough motivation to run this race.

Let Me Please Introduce Myself

My name is Brian. I'm 28 years old and live in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. I have a beautiful wife and two beautiful daughters. My oldest, Rosemarie, is 8 and my youngest, Margaret, is 3.

I am not an athelete by any means. Growing up I was the kid who was picked last when picking teams in the school yard at recess. I played Soccer, but wasn't very goood. I wouldn't admit it to anyone, but my lack of athletic skills was starting to hurt my self-esteem. I finally found something I was good at at the age of 16. Football Officiating. For the last 12 years I've been a Football Official.

Football Officiating was the boost my self-esteem needed. It was actually thanks to my fellow Football Officials that I started being a runner. In February of last year some fellow Officials and myself entered a relay race called the Great Grain Relay. Each team member would run 800 metres and then tag off to his/her team mate who would run another 800 metres. The race lasted 2 hours. The goal was too run as many laps as possible. This race got me started as a serious runner. Now I run an average of 12 miles/week. My goal is to someday run one of our 2 major Marathon's that we have in Winnipeg. The Winnipeg Police Services Half Marathon and the Manitoba Marathon.

My grandmother once told me that I am one of the most determined people she has ever known. She said that she has always been amazed by how I set goals for myself and will stop at nothing to make sure I acheive those goals. Running at least one of these Marathon's is just another one of those goals. Sadly my grandmother passed away one week ago. This goal of running one of these Marathon's is now stronger than ever. I love you Grandma.
